Historical and Cultural Significance

Established over 50 years ago, Mount Mitchell Heritage Prairie Park honors the Connecticut abolitionists who fought to defeat slavery. The park is part of the Freedom’s Frontier National Heritage Area and the National Park Service’s Network to Freedom Program, celebrating the Underground Railroad’s history. Once part of Captain William Mitchell’s farm, the 170-acre park is home to both historical significance and natural beauty. The hilltop prairie has been sacred to Native Peoples for generations, so please respect the cultural heritage of the site during your visit.
